In one line

Grab it if you need a school bottle a young child opens with one press and that keeps water cold until lunch.

Look elsewhere if your child is old enough to carry 24 oz. The Owala FreeSip is a common next step.

What to know about the Thermos Funtainer

Twelve ounces is small on purpose. It fits a lunch box side pocket and a seven-year-old's hand. The pop-up straw is covered, which keeps lunch crumbs out of it.

Our scan of this model captured bullets only, so no weight or base is printed. Measure a lunch box pocket if you plan to use one.

A pack of four replacement straws appeared in the same scan, so spares exist. Plan to swap the straw when it gets chewed.

Living with it

Age and hands

The push button and the covered straw make it a kids bottle. Small hands open it without unscrewing anything, and the cover keeps the straw tip off lunch crumbs. Twelve ounces is small on purpose, so it does not drag a backpack down. Small is the point.

Spares and labels

Straws get chewed. A pack of four replacement straws showed up in the same scan, so that is a cheap fix. Label the bottle too: a pack of 136 waterproof name labels costs less than half the price of a new Funtainer, which makes it cheap insurance for a bottle that will be left on a bus at least once.

Cold only

The listing says up to 12 hours cold and not for hot liquids. That covers a school day from breakfast to pickup. Hot cocoa belongs in a food jar or a bottle rated for hot drinks, and on a winter morning that means a separate container in the lunch bag, since a straw would deliver hot liquid faster than a child expects.

Common questions

Which bottle is easy for kids and will not leak in a backpack?

This is our kids pick. The lid opens with one press, the straw is covered and pops up, and the listing calls it leak proof when closed.

How this plays out across all 10Cheap fix: Waterproof name labels

Will it leak in my bag?

Leak proof when closed, per Thermos. Trouble usually starts when the lid gets pressed open inside a packed backpack, so teach the habit of closing it before it goes in.

Will the lid get moldy, and can I clean it?

The straw comes out for cleaning. Pull it daily, rinse it and push a thin straw brush through it once a week.
